What can we do today to protect the variety of life on our planet for ourselves and for future generations?

Kidjīmāninān brings together Indigenous and non-Indigenous people in the Outaouais to protect our land and its rich biodiversity.

The Outaouais region: Beauty worth protecting

The Outaouais region is home to many plants and animals that are at risk of disappearing if we don’t step in to help, including:

113

plant species

92

animal species

22

mosses and lichens

While Quebec and Canada have pledged to protect 30% of their territory by 2030, only 10.2% of the Outaouais is currently protected. We have a lot of work to do.

Together, we can reverse biodiversity loss

Biodiversity is the variety of living things in an area, including plants, animals and microorganisms. A rich species diversity helps ecosystems function well, allowing life to flourish and thrive.

We do not have to accept biodiversity loss.
We can all be part of the solution. We can work together now to reverse the trend.

Kidjīmāninān builds on the collective knowledge of Indigenous and non-Indigenous people who want to make meaningful changes. This unprecedented collaboration brings together all who care about protecting the amazing biodiversity of the Outaouais.

Who can take part?

Anyone can participate : whether you are part of the Kitigan Zibi Anishinàbeg community, a scientist, a local leader, or a nature lover in the Outaouais region, you have an important role to play. All types of knowledge are valuable as we identify key areas for protection.

The success of the project requires that we all contribute in a variety of ways. For instance:

  • Share your knowledge of the land through our upcoming consultation initiatives
  • Participate in future activities, including both consultations and hands-on, engaging challenges for participants of all ages
  • Collaborate on field studies

Once we gather all the information, Kidjīmāninān will create a roadmap that includes tools and strategies aimed at protecting the areas that need it most.

Kidjīmāninān is an Anishinàbemòwin (Algonquin) word that means “our canoe”. Since time immemorial, Anishinàbe used the canoe to protect precious materials and resources during travel that were needed for survival.  It was robust enough to journey on the waterways, yet light enough to carry when rapids and other obstacles made traveling on the water challenging.

In much the same way, this project looks to protect the precious resources – the rich biodiversity and interconnected ecosystems that support life on the planet.  In navigating ahead, we want to make a robust plan, even if we may have to all pitch in to “portage” around obstacles every now and then.  We all live all planet earth, so we are all in this together, making it imperative to unite our efforts.  The only way to move forward together, is for us to do our part as we each paddle in “our canoe”.

About the Natural Resources and Wildlife Office

The Kitigan Zibi Anishinàbeg Natural Resources and Wildlife Office (NRWO) is dedicated to protecting and managing the land for future generations. The NRWO has a dedicated team of forestry engineers, biologists and administrative staff. We collaborate with a range of partners to ensure sustainable environmental management, including forest management, wildlife conservation and the preservation of Anishinàbe culture.
